In
Memory for our former Vice President and Founder Member
It
was with great sadness that we announced the death of Julian Brinkworth,
our Vice
President and Founder Member of Rookwood Sound Hospital Broadcasting in June 2004.
Julian
was born
in Surrey and brought up in Cardiff, and raised on radio rather than
television. He trained first as a radio officer for possible service in
the Merchant Navy but instead he worked first as a full-time student
leader. He then worked in the voluntary sector and his love of radio
resurfaced when he and a group of volunteers raised more than £30,000 to
set up a radio station at Rookwood Hospital.
He
organised the most ambitious fundraising event ever by hiring
Concorde to come to Cardiff and Fly paying passengers to and from London
this raised the profile of Rookwood Sound and led to further financial
support this was a great success. He was tireless in his efforts to run a
professional station and spent hour after hour ensuring Rookwood Sound
lived up to his standards the same standards we use today.
In
2002, Julian was on hand to oversee a new era at Rookwood with
programmes being broadcast 24 hours a day and the opening of a
new studio called 'The Julian Brinkworth Studio'.
Steve
Allen, Chief Executive said "I
was honored
to take over as Secretary and later after reorganisation Chief Executive
from Julian who was not only a professional broadcaster but an expert
administrator which made my job easier also knowing that he was only a
telephone call away should he be needed.
He was given the post of Vice President of Rookwood Sound in 1995
and again he carried out that role with enthusiasm and even though he was
not keeping good health he was planning a major fundraising campaign for
the station. I am sure that without his dedication and commitment Rookwood
Sound Hospital Broadcasting would not be in existence today; he will be
greatly missed by all members of the station and we can take solace in the
fact that he gave pleasure to thousands of people across South Wales
through his hard work in managing a professional hospital radio service
for Rookwood and Llandough Hospital."
It
was from there that he joined the BBC. Julian joined BBC Radio Wales in
1990, working as a continuity announcer, presenter and newsreader. Julie
Barton, The
editor of Radio Wales, said Julian was a consummate
professional and a lovely man who will be very much missed
His
other big interest was buses - he formed the Cardiff Transport
Preservation Group and his company Leisurelink began the first guided
open-top bus tours of Cardiff.
It
goes without saying that our thoughts will always be with his family.
